Summer vacation is often a wonderful time for sleeping in, long evenings, and days without a set schedule. But before you know it, the backpacks are packed again, the alarm clock goes off early, and the usual routine starts all over. At our house, too, it always takes a little while to adjust. With these tips, we make the transition a little smoother and more enjoyable.
1. Start getting back into the routine early
A few days before school starts, I try to gradually adjust bedtime and wake-up times again. Don’t change everything all at once—just take it step by step to get back into a comfortable routine.
2. Get school supplies ready together
New pencils, a nice planner, or a fresh lunchbox… I always enjoy getting the school supplies ready together. This gets the kids excited to start again and makes the first day of school feel less daunting.
3. Plan for a calm morning
The first few mornings can get pretty hectic. So lay out their clothes the night before, put their backpacks by the door, and pack their lunchboxes as much as possible. That saves a lot of rushing around.
4. Make lunch a fun experience
A cheerful lunchbox immediately sets the tone for a great start to the school day. Vary the contents with fruit, vegetables, and small snacks, and throw in a fun surprise every now and then. A sweet note or a fun cookie cutter often works wonders.
5. Take time to catch up
After weeks of vacation, kids often have lots of stories to tell. Don’t just ask how school was—also listen to the little things: what was fun, what did they find exciting, and what are they looking forward to?
6. Bring some structure back into the days
After a vacation full of outings and spontaneous plans, it can be nice to get some structure back. A family planner, calendar, or list on the fridge helps everyone know what’s coming up.
7. Make time for something creative
A new school year doesn’t mean all the fun is over. Plan a creative activity after school: draw, do crafts, or color together. Taking a moment to relax after a busy day is good for everyone.
8. Allow for a little nervousness
For some children, the first day of school can be pretty nerve-wracking. A new classroom, a different teacher, or getting used to waking up early again. Talk about it and let them know that feeling a little nervous is just part of the experience.
9. Keep the evenings calm
After a full day of school, it’s nice to recharge at home. Eating together, playing a game, or reading for a bit before bedtime helps wrap up the day on a calm note.
10. Don’t forget about yourself
As a parent, a busy period is starting again. So don’t just plan everything for the kids—make time for yourself, too. A walk, a cup of tea in the garden, or quietly flipping through a magazine can be enough to recharge.
A great start for everyone
A new school year always takes some getting used to, but it also brings new stories, friends, discoveries, and wonderful moments. With a little preparation, we can make the transition a lot easier and start fresh together.
Love, Daphne
