Packing your suitcase can be an art in itself, especially if you want to travel light. Here are some practical and smart tips for packing your suitcase as efficiently as possible so you can enjoy a relaxing vacation.
1. Make a list (and start early)
Write down what you really need and think in terms of categories: clothes – toiletries – documents – accessories. Start a few days in advance so you can take your time adding or removing items.
2. Roll your clothes instead of folding them
Save space and prevent wrinkles by rolling your clothes. Roll them by outfit or by type of clothing. Want to be extra organized? Then use rubber bands or packing straps.
3. Use packing cubes or small bags
Keep socks, underwear, swimwear, and accessories separate. This way, you’ll find everything faster and can keep dirty laundry separate later.
4. Stuff small items into your shoes
Fill the shoes you’re bringing with socks, chargers, or sunglasses (in a case). This saves space and keeps your shoes in shape. Be sure to put your shoes in a separate bag so your clothes stay clean.
5. Place heavy items at the bottom (near the wheels)
For example, shoes, your toiletries bag, or books. This will keep your suitcase stable when you stand it upright.
6. Use refillable travel bottles for toiletries
Pack only what you need and use small bottles of no more than 100 ml, especially if you’re traveling with carry-on luggage. Label them so you know what’s what—and you’re ready to go!
7. Wear your heaviest/bulkiest clothes during your trip
If you want to bring sneakers, wear them instead of packing them in your suitcase. Also, wear your coat or thick sweater on the plane—it can double as a pillow later on.
8. Use compression bags
Compression bags are ideal for packing bulky clothing. They squeeze out the air, giving you more space in your bag.
Which tips are you definitely going to use?
