Have you ever noticed how those warm summer days seem to pass by a little bit more slowly? It’s as if the air is completely still, sounds are quieter and time itself is stretching out. Where I’m normally rushing from place to place, the summer seems like an invitation to spend a bit more time doing
nothing. I’ve collected six ways to experience the peace of summer moments by the sea.
Breathe with the rhythm of the ocean
Sit or lie down comfortably in the sand and close your eyes. Inhale slowly as a wave comes in. Exhale as the water goes back out. Don’t try to force it, just follow the tide. The natural rhythm will slow your breathing and calm your mind.
Feel the sand beneath your feet
Stand still with both feet planted in the sand. Feel the heat and structure. Slowly shift your weight. Notice what you feel without any judgement. Your focus will naturally move to your physical body. This helps you to get out of your head and really be in the moment – simple and grounding.
Allow your thoughts to drift
Take a seat and listen to the sea. If a thought pops up, imagine it sitting on top of a wave. Picture it slowly drifting away. You don’t have to x it, just let it go. Each wave carries something away with it. That leaves you with a feeling of peace.
Look as if you’ve never seen the sea before
Take some time to look around you. The colour of the water, the light on the waves and the clouds moving by. Notice all the details without naming them. Just look. This exercise slows down your thoughts and increases your sense of wonder, so you feel lighter and freer.
Rest in the horizon
Focus your eyes on the horizon, where the sea meets the sky. Soften your gaze and allow it to rest there. Notice how everything else becomes much bigger than you. Breathe slowly in and out while you look. No beginning, no end. Just space. This exercise helps you to put your worries in perspective and see the big picture, leaving you with a sense of confidence and security.
End with gratitude
Lay a hand on your stomach and breathe slowly in and out. Think of three things that are special about this moment. The sun, the wind and time to yourself. Feel the gratitude spreading through your body. It’s a simple way to finish the day that anchors that sense of peace and helps you to take the feeling with you.
Love, Daphne
