When the leaves start to fall and it gets dark earlier outside, my mom thinks that’s the perfect time to give her house a thorough cleaning and get it ready for the cozy fall months. I asked her for a few inspiring tips to make that fall cleaning not only effective but also fun!
Make a plan
Make a list in advance of the rooms you want to tackle and the chores you want to do. That way, you’ll know exactly what needs to be done, and it’s always satisfying to cross things off your list as you finish them. Work through all the chores room by room. For example, start with the living room and work your way through the house, one room at a time. This prevents you from feeling overwhelmed and helps you stay focused.
Check Your Light Fixtures
Now that the days are getting shorter, it’s important to give your home’s lighting a thorough check. Replace any burned-out bulbs, and while you’re at it, add some mood lighting to give your home a cozy, warm atmosphere for the coming months.
Do a big load of laundry
Put all your bedding, picnic blankets, beach towels, throws, and curtains in the wash, or have them professionally cleaned. Afterward, your home will feel wonderfully clean and fresh.
Sort through your clothes
Use your fall cleaning to take a critical look at your closet. Donate clothes you no longer wear to a charity or organize a clothing swap with friends. It’s much easier and more fun to organize a closet that contains only items you love to wear. Put away your summer clothes and bring out your warm sweaters and coats.
Put your garden into hibernation
Spend some extra time on your garden and outdoor space. Rake leaves, clean the gutters, and get your patio furniture ready for winter. That way, your outdoor space will look neat and tidy while you’re cozy indoors during the cold months, where it’s warm and comfortable.
Love, Daphne
