What is Halloween without a pumpkin with a spooky face? With a nice orange pumpkin, a sharp knife, and a little imagination, you can make your own cheerful or spooky Halloween lantern. Place an LED tea light inside and let it glow!
Here’s what you’ll need
- A large pumkin
- A sharp knife or pumpkin carving set
- A large spoon
- A bowl for the pumpkin flesh
- LED tea light
Here’s how to make it:
1. Prepare the pumpkin. Wash and dry the pumpkin. Lay out some old newspapers or paper on the table to protect your work surface.
2. Hollow out the pumpkin. Carefully cut a round hole in the bottom of the pumpkin. Set aside the cut-out piece. Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and flesh, and scrape the inside clean.
3. Carve the eyes. Decide what kind of face you want to give the pumpkin. Carefully carve out two large eyes. Make them round, triangular, or slightly slanted for a spooky look.
4. Cut out the mouth. Give your pumpkin a wide grin with sharp teeth. Carefully cut out small pieces of the rind until you’re happy with its face.
5. Let it shine. Place an LED tea light where you want to put the pumpkin, and set the pumpkin on top of it. As soon as it gets dark, its spooky face will really come to life!
Tip: Don’t throw away the pumpkin seeds! Rinse them clean and roast them in the oven with a little oil and spices. They’re a tasty snack to munch on during a fun Halloween evening.
Note: Only let children help with carving under adult supervision. Use an LED tea light instead of a real candle.
