Floral-shaped shortbread biscuits

Last weekend, I decided to bake floral-shaped shortbread biscuits. Sounds simple, right? Well, that’s what I thought too. The ingredients were ready, the kids were eager, and of course, Barney couldn’t resist sneaking a taste of the dough. “Testing,” he said with his mouth full. When it came time to roll it out, the kitchen turned into a battlefield of flour and oddly shaped flower biscuits. The smarties were scattered all over the counter. Not every biscuit had exactly six petals, but they still turned out rather lovely. And that’s the fun of it: a little bit of chaos, lots of laughter, and in the end, biscuits we enjoyed together with tea. Sometimes, a cosy atmosphere is the best ingredient. Now, just to tidy up that kitchen…

Floral-shaped shortbread biscuits

If you fancy giving this recipe a try, I’m more than happy to share it with you! They were really tasty. And these cheerful, flowery biscuits do add a special touch to tea time. They’re quite easy to make, and you don’t need too many ingredients either.

Here’s what you’ll need

  • 100 grams of sugar
  • 200 grams of butter (cold)
  • 300 grams of flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • Smarties or chocolate M&M’s
  • Optional: lemon

Other items:

  • Baking paper
  • Mixer with dough hooks
  • Knife

Here’s how to make these cheerful shortbread biscuits

  1. Take the baking tray out of the oven and line it with baking paper. Preheat the oven to 160°C.
  2. Combine the sugar, butter, flour, and pinch of salt, and mix until smooth.
  3. Roll the dough into one large ball, then divide it into small balls—these will be the flower petals. Arrange five small dough balls in a circle on the baking tray to form a flower, then press them flat. You can use the blunt side of a knife to add some detail. Press a Smartie into the centre of each flower.
  4. Place the tray in the middle of the oven and bake for about 30 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Take the tray out of the oven and let the biscuits cool completely. And then, it’s time to taste them!

Tip: Add a bit of lemon zest to the dough for a fresh twist.
