Super simple apple “doughnuts” with 4 ingredients

In the autumn, the kids and I always enjoy baking something together. It’s that time of year when you just want to stay indoors, especially when it’s pouring down outside, like today. You know the feeling: everyone’s snuggled up on the sofa with a blanket, but then you get the urge to make something tasty. I didn’t have much at home and really didn’t feel like going out in the rain for shopping. Fortunately, I still had a roll of puff pastry in the fridge and a couple of apples left. That’s how these super simple apple “doughnuts” with just four ingredients came to be. Well, doughnuts… they’re kind of doughnut-shaped. And honestly? They taste just as good!

Here’s what you’ll need for about 7 apple “doughnuts”:

  • 1 roll of puff pastry
  • 2 apples
  • 20 grams of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon

Optional:

  • Icing sugar or caramel sauce (or both)

How to make them:

  • Preheat the oven to 200°C. While the oven heats up, you can peel the apples and slice them into thin rings. Remove the core, either with a knife or a sharp bottle cap, so you end up with nice round apple rings with a hole in the middle. You could also use an apple corer, but if you make the hole a bit bigger than that, it’s easier to twist the dough through.
  • Mix the sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl. Then press the apple rings into the sugar-cinnamon mixture on both sides, so they’re well coated.
  • Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into long, thin strips. Take an apple ring, one at a time, and wrap a strip of puff pastry around it until the apple ring is completely covered.
  • Place the “doughnuts” on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake them for about 20 minutes, until they’re golden brown and your kitchen smells wonderfully of apple and cinnamon.

Optional: Once they’ve cooled down, you can drizzle some caramel sauce over them or dust them with a bit of icing sugar for an extra sweet touch.

And that’s it! Super simple, but so delicious. This recipe is perfect when you don’t have much at home but still want to make something tasty. And the kids? They absolutely loved it. The result: tasty treats, happy faces, and the delightful scent of apple and cinnamon filling the house. Definitely something to do more often, especially on a rainy day like this. Sometimes, it really is that simple.

Love, Daphne
