Flowers in Clay

I wanted to make something out of clay again. I usually buy self-drying clay at the craft store. That way, I don’t have to bake it. I’d seen a clay wall panel online with flowers painted on it, so I got to work. But once I’d shaped the panel, I had the idea to carve the flowers into it with a modeling tool and then paint them with watercolors. The idea turned out well, and here’s the result.

Here’s what you’ll need:
– clay
– rolling pin
– modeling tool
– paintbrush
– watercolor paint
– glass of water
– dried flowers

1. Knead the clay until it forms a soft mass. That takes quite a bit of strength.

2. Roll out the clay with a rolling pin into a sheet about 1 cm thick.

3. Decide on the shape of your panel. Square, round, or—as I did—rectangular.

4. Fold the edges in half and use your fingers to shape them into a rough frame.

5. Press the twigs and flowers into the clay to create a relief pattern. If necessary, use the modeling stick to help you. Remove the twigs and flowers again.

6 Paint the twigs and flowers in relief. Use whatever colors you like. This way, you’ll create a beautiful work of art.

You can make this, too. It’s really easy and so much fun.
Have fun with clay!
Love, Daphne
