In the summer, I love sitting outside, sometimes chatting with friends well into the early hours of the morning. Unfortunately, we’re often bothered by buzzing mosquitoes. Fortunately, I’ve discovered a simple and charming solution: homemade lemon candles. They look beautiful on the table and help keep mosquitoes at bay. Read on to find out how to make them yourself, so you can enjoy a long summer evening in the garden without any interruptions.
Here’s what you’ll need:
– small glass jar
– meltable beeswax
– lemon slices (fresh or dried)
– fragrant essential oil (e.g., lemon, orange, or lime)
– wicks
– skewers
– clothespins
– melting pot
– natural food coloring
Attach the wick to a skewer with a clothespin, as shown in the photo. Make sure the wick hangs straight down and is centered in the jar.
Cut a thin slice of lemon and carefully place it in the empty jar. Position the slice against the side of the jar so that it remains visible once you pour the wax in.
Melt the beeswax in a double boiler (not directly in the pan, to prevent burning). Stir occasionally until the wax is completely liquid. Remove the pan from the heat and add 10–20 drops of essential oil per candle. Stir well. You can also add a little natural food coloring if desired.
Slowly pour the warm wax into the jar, over the lemon. Let the wick hang in place, secured with the skewer and the clothespin. Let the candle cool for at least 2 hours on a flat surface. Then trim the wick to about 1 cm above the wax surface.
Love, Daphne
