The days are getting shorter, there’s a chill in the air and it feels like everything has shifted down a gear. Luckily there’s a simple habit that can really help keep your spirits up at this time of year: journaling.
What is journaling exactly?
Put simply, journaling is writing down whatever’s on your mind. You can decorate the pages of your journal with illustrations, photos, stickers and doodles too. You can journal in a nice notebook, on your laptop or even in the notes app on your phone. It’s just about putting your thoughts and feelings into words.
Why autumn?
We all tend to withdraw into ourselves a bit in the autumn. Nature is slowing down and that encourages us to spend more time in our own homes and our own inner worlds. Journaling is a great way to get to know yourself and achieve a sense of peace. It helps you to process stress or gloomy thoughts, and gives you insight into what makes you feel good.
A couple of tips to get you started:
Start with five minutes a day. Don’t put any pressure on yourself, just sit down and write. Use simple prompts like: “How do I feel today?” or “What has made me feel energised lately?” Be honest. No one else is reading, your journal is just for you.
So, make yourself a cup of tea, curl up on the sofa with a blanket and allow your thoughts to flow onto the page. Journaling isn’t a miracle cure, but it’s a cosy, gentle form
of self-care. Just what the doctor ordered this autumn.
Love, Daphne
