Cooking on the campfire

Campfire bread

Campfire bread

There are lots of different ways to enjoy these campfire breads. They make a great savoury snack filled with ham, and with a bit of butter and sugar they’re a delicious sweet treat.

You will need (for 8 breads):

– 400 g self-raising flour
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 320 g Greek yoghurt
– 4 or 8 sticks
– aluminium foil
– Anything you would like to fill the breads with, like ham or chocolate spread

How to make them:

First make the dough. Add all three ingredients to a large bowl and mix well until they form one big ball of dough. Divide this up into eight smaller balls. Roll each of the balls out into a sausage shape, about 1.5 cm thick.  Wrap each of these around a long, clean stick. It’s easiest if you wrap the top of the stick in aluminium foil first. Now it’s time to bake them! Make sure the flames aren’t too high and that your sticks are nice and long. Once the breads are baked, you can add either a sweet or savoury filling, like ham or chocolate spread.

Baked potatoes with vegetables

Baked potatoes

You will need (to serve 4):

– Floury potatoes, 1 or 2 per person depending on how big they are, try to make sure they are all a similar size
– Fresh vegetables like parsnip, pumpkin, onion or pepper
– Seasoning like salt, pepper or rosemary to taste
– A tasty topping if you’d like to add one, such as herb butter, cream or grated cheese
– Aluminium foil

How to make them:

Scrub the potatoes, brush them with some olive oil and then prick a few holes in each one. Now wrap them in aluminium foil. You can add any firm vegetables like parsnip and pumpkin in with the potatoes. If you’re using any softer vegetables, these can be added later. Place the packages at the edge of the campfire, just out of reach of the flames, otherwise the potatoes will get burnt. The best way to do it is to make the fire ahead of time and then cook the potatoes for 20 to 45 minutes on top of the hot embers.

Campfire sausages

Campfire sausages

You will need (to serve 4):

– A long skewer or stick
– 4 sausages
– Ingredients for a marinade if desired, such as honey, garlic powder or paprika

How to make them:

Insert the skewer through the middle of each sausage and brush them with a little bit of marinade (made from honey and paprika, for example) if you’d like to. Cook the sausages over the campfire and make sure they don’t touch the flames themselves, otherwise they’ll burn. Keep turning the sausages all the time. Depending on how big they are, they will be ready to eat in 10 to 25 minutes.

Banana boats

Banana boats

You will need (to serve 4):

– 4 bananas in their skins
– olive oil
– marshmallows or chocolate
– aluminium foil

How to make them:

Take four pieces of aluminium foil and brush them with some oil. Cut open the banana skins, but make sure you leave about half a centimetre at the top and the bottom, so the skins don’t fall off completely. Open up the banana skin a little and add some chocolate or marshmallows to the banana. Wrap each banana up in a piece of foil, making sure it’s completely sealed and then place on the hot embers for about 8 minutes. Delicious!
