Growing microgreens

Have you ever heard of microgreens? They’re adorable, tiny plants that you can harvest when they’re just a couple of weeks old. They grow from the seeds of all kinds of vegetables, herbs and even flowers. It’s amazing how much flavour can be packed into such a small plant. And they’re full of nutrients too.

You will need:
– seeds
– seed trays or pots
– compost or coconut coir
– water
– scissors

1. Choose your potting material

You can use compost or coconut coir. The advantage of coconut coir is that it only expands once it gets wet, so it doesn’t take up much storage space while it’s still dry.

2. Choose your seeds

Choose the microgreen seeds that sound the most appealing to you. If you like sharp flavours, try rocket, mustard or radish. Microgreens with milder flavours include peas, basil, broccoli or spinach.

3. Plant your seeds

Fill your tray or pot with your chosen material and sprinkle seeds on top. The packaging will tell you how densely to sow each microgreen..

4. Water

Watering with a spray bottle is handy because it’s the best way to add water little by little, but if you don’t have one you can use a watering can. It’s important to keep the substrate damp but not waterlogged..

5. Find the right spot

Microgreens need a lot of light to grow. Put them on a sunny windowsill where they will receive 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. You can also use artificial light. The plants will do best at room temperature.

6. Time to harvest

As soon as the microgreens are a couple of centimetres tall, you can harvest them! Cut them carefully, just above the surface.
