Soups for colds and flu. The cold days are coming, with their crisp air and the scent of falling leaves, but also those annoying sneezes and colds knocking at the door. There are few things as comforting as a warm bowl of soup when you’re not feeling well. And recently, I read somewhere that these soups help with colds and flu. I wanted to learn more about that. Read along to find out.
Chicken Soup
Chicken soup is, of course, a classic that everyone knows. The warmth of the soup helps loosen mucus and relieve a stuffy nose. The chicken itself is packed with proteins that help your body recover, while the vegetables provide a good dose of vitamins and minerals.
Onion Soup
Not everyone likes onion soup, but when you have a cold, it’s a wise choice. Onions contain quercetin, which is an antioxidant that strengthens the immune system and has anti-inflammatory properties, soothing the throat.
Pumpkin Soup
This is a good choice for a day when you could use some extra resistance. Pumpkin is rich in vitamin A, which is good for the respiratory system. Add a bit of turmeric too—it tastes great, and it also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent.
Vegetable Soup
This is a real vitamin bomb, and you can definitely use vitamins when you’re feeling under the weather. Vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, and tomatoes contain a lot of vitamin C and antioxidants, which can give your immune system a serious boost. Also, add some garlic to your soup; it contains a compound that thins mucus, finally helping you get rid of that blocked nose.
When Rob or the kids are feeling a bit flu-ish, I head to the kitchen and make a delicious, nutritious soup. I use fresh, healthy ingredients and add some spicy herbs and spices, like ginger, garlic, pepper, and turmeric. And most of the time, they really perk up afterward. There’s something comforting, though—warm sweaters, cups of tea, and a blanket wrapped around you (click here for tips to keep your feet warm!) Maybe this is the perfect time to take it easy and give yourself some extra care. With chicken soup on the stove and a soft scarf around your neck, we can welcome this time with warmth and love for ourselves and each other. Hopefully, these soups for colds and flu will help you feel better ✨
Love, Daphne
