Of course, I go for a walk with Mr. Bear every day. Although I have to admit that sometimes it’s just a quick loop around the block, instead of a lovely half-hour walk across the heath. Still, he draws me outside every day, and secretly, I’m actually quite happy about that.
Because when I once looked into the benefits of walking, I discovered that a daily walk offers much more than just a breath of fresh air. Walking does wonders for both body and mind. Curious about the wonderful benefits I discovered? Be sure to read on!
It reduces stress
Marjolijn started walking to reduce her stress levels. She’d also gotten that tip from someone else. Walking helps flush the stress hormone cortisol out of your body, because you literally slow down and unwind. That doesn’t happen when you’re biking or running. You’re more present
when walking than with any other form of exercise.
Reduces the risk of diabetes
If you walk enough, sugar is removed from your blood more easily and your blood sugar levels drop. You burn fat, your muscles get stronger, and your bones become denser. All of these are benefits that help prevent diabetes.
Good for your heart and blood vessels
Your heart and blood vessels are your body’s engine. “Well, duh,” you might think, but people tend to forget that. You keep that little engine running by taking good care of yourself, and that includes exercise in general—but walking especially so. That’s because it lowers your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. In addition, walking for half an hour every day improves the health of your heart and blood vessels.
It makes you happy
Various studies show that you become less negative when you take a brisk walk regularly. While walking,
your body produces serotonin, the “happiness hormone.” Your body produces it whenever you move, but also when you see beautiful things. That combination really comes to the fore when you’re walking!
Your brain gets healthier
Walking improves both your ability to learn and your long-term memory, as Marjolijn told me. I did some research online, and sure enough: even several professors emphasize how important walking is for keeping your brain healthy.
Now that I’ve heard and read about these benefits again, I’m definitely going to keep walking every single day. Plus, it seems to help combat the autumn blues, which is just wonderful.
Love, Daphne
